Many people assume that because I’m gluten free means I eat gross disgusting food all day. If you know me at all you’d be rest assured that’s not possible. Um, hello, no. I LOVE eating and food. For those of you who are also GF or maybe looking to explore the health benefits of this diet but are afraid you’ll starve – here is my all time FAVORITE gluten free snacks that you can buy!
Udi’s Dark Chocolate Brownie Bites: Found at the local grocery store for a few dollars. These are yummy little bite sized treats I take in the car with me on long road trips. Even though I’m not a huge fan of dark chocolate (no pun intended… I love me some DARK chocolate if you know what I mean) however these little bites have chocolate chips in them too which makes them sweet enough for me! Last time I did a little event for my 12th graders one of my student’s moms remembered that I was gluten free and sent her kid to my house with these! I was SO touched by that gesture! Best gift ever.
Trader Joe’s Snickerdoodles: Found at TJ’s for who the flip cares how much money because they’re freaking life changing food of the gods (okay, they are $3 a box for 12 cookies). Seriously. I mean. Seriously. These are also VEGAN for my vegan friends. If you were to tell me there was extraordinarily delicious GF vegan snickerdoodles in existence I would have probably laughed a year ago. Not only are these SO AMAZING they are SO SOFT as if they just came out of the oven. Grab these and a cup of tea and a good book and you can last for days.
Cinnamon Roasted Almonds: Found at Trader Joe’s for $6.49. I love these but really any nuts will do! I also love pistachios. However sometimes you just need a sweet cinnamon nut fix. You can even warm these up and pretend you’re at the fair or Six Flags for half the price!
KAF Brownie Mix: Found at Market Basket or local grocery store for around $5 a box. This brownie mix tastes better than 90% of the brownies I’ve had in my LIFE that were definitely not gluten free. My husband could not tell in the slightest these were GF. So worth the five bucks every time. You may not consider this a “snack” (certainly not a healthy snack) but let’s just get real… I make brownies and snack on them all day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. King Arthur Flour does a ton of GF products and love them ALL.
Banana with Nutella: Found at your local grocery stores for under $5. Really this would work with any fruit, but my personal favorite is the banana for eating in the morning or with Nutella. Plus I feel so european when I eat nutella.
Hummus: Found at your local grocery store for around $4. The photo you see above is the Hummus medley from Trader Joe’s because who wants to choose between all the amazing flavors? If you don’t consider yourself a hummus person or don’t like the taste of plain hummus I suggest you try some flavored ones. I thought I didn’t like hummus until I had roasted red pepper…. YUM! You can eat hummus with any delicious veggie – my favorite is the sugar snap pea! You can also eat it with some GF chips or crackers… like the ones I mention next!
“Food Should Taste Good” Chips: Found at Whole Foods or certain flavors at local grocery store for $3 a bag. I’ve found these at Hannafords and other places like Market Basket for cheaper or on sale. I love this company’s name firstly! It truly tastes amazing. My favorite flavor is the Sweet Potato chips… which is weird since I don’t actually like sweet potatoes by themselves! Second favorite is the Olive ones followed by the blue corn ones for salsa dipping. I eat cheese with the Olive ones. Hummus (or nothing) with the delish Sweet Potato ones.
Pepperoni & Cheese on Crackers: Classic go to appetizer and afternoon snack on GF crackers! Of course you can find pepperoni for $2 or whatever at your local grocery. I buy my cheese at Trader Joe’s (or Market Basket if it’s just a plain block of white sharp cheddar). I buy POUNDS of cheese a week. My husband has warned me we may need another source of income to support my cheese habit. Southern people… guess what your cheese is not supposed to be orange. Get it together. That’s gross. Try a nice french brie with Trader Joe’s Savory Thin Mini Crackers ($1.50) or some GF bread! You can also try my all time favorite cracker (gluten free or not) which is Almond Nut-Thins in smokehouse flavor ($4 at local grocery like MB) with pepperoni and sharp cheddar. WOW!!!! I basically eat crackers with cheese & pep every night before I go to bed. I’m sad if I don’t and just think about cheese all night and never sleep. I wish I was kidding.
Edamame: Found in frozen section of local grocery or TJ’s for $2 or less a bag. I know, edamame isn’t really that healthy or good for you even! Especially for you men… there’s a lot of estrogen in them. My husband says I don’t need any more of that estrogen stuff but I can’t stop! Won’t stop! Add some salt and serve. I serve this at every dinner party I host for an appetizer (spoiler alert if you’re thinking about coming over for din din).
Udi’s “Everything” Bagel: Found in frozen section of Whole Foods or Market Basket for around $5 dollars. Okay, fine, maybe even $6 sometimes… it’s worth it! Even though there’s only four bagels in the baggie (yikes) I am totally addicted. Yes, I suppose this one isn’t technically a snack either. This is more a breakfast food and I have these 80% of all mornings…. that I’m awake for.
Yum! I’m getting hungry. If you’re still looking for options you can check out what your local groceries have in their GF section (Hannaford’s is decent). Be careful with certain GF snack products because though they may be gluten free they aren’t always healthy… lots have tons of GMO’s or MSG or just made of chemical ca ca. Also, you can find great GF recipes at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, King Arthur Flour, Udi’s, or of course good ol’ Pinterest (plus check out all the GF holiday recipes Whole Foods just posted OMG!). Whole Foods and Tj’s also list all their GF products on their website.
