Just as BBQ really fires up I have for you the lawn game that will absolutely make your next cook out! It’s called “Molkky” and was originally invented by a company in Finland. I was visiting with good friends in California who had returned from their honeymoon in Paris where they learned this game. I’ll be honest, I’m really not a games person. I’d rather just sit together with my friends over a fire or a good cup of tea. So this game HAS to be entertaining to get me involved (finally). Here’s a little video of how the game is played that I found on youtube… apparently the most popular game in Nordic countries!
Now, let’s make our own set! All we need to do is venture out to Home Depot and buy a really long stick 3 inches in diameter and have them cut it in slices for you. You need 12 pieces about the same height and then one throwing stick a little longer (about a foot). I had Clark do that part for me, teehee. Some stores won’t cut diagonal lines for you, so hopefully if that’s your case you know what handy friend to call. Luckily Clark knew someone with a power saw. It’s that simple! When he brought the pieces back me and my girl Trinity went to work on painting our set. This is the part where you can customize the set to your own taste. I love the aztec and spanish/mexican looking design so I went with that. You can decorate them anyway you want! I wanted to have the best looking Molkky set anyone’s ever seen! Ok… I have to get out more. That’s a strange desire but whatever. You’ve never seen a better looking set than this!!!
I first traced the outline of the design I wanted.
I found inspiration on pinterest and I googled aztec prints. We painted in the design with acrylic paint and then bought a wood sealant spray paint in hopes to preserve my beautiful pieces!
I also decided to switch it up and paint all the tops purple and make the numbers on top white!
We may have watched quite a few Switched at Birth episodes during the making of this Molkky set…
We waited for the paint to dry, sprayed to seal, and voila! For mere dollars and a few hours of your time (depending on how you want to paint your set) you have a brand new Molkky set. Many people leave their set rather plain and just put numbers on top. That would take minutes! Are you ready to play?
Doesn’t the finished product look amazing? I’d want to play just because they look so pretty!
My three nephews were READY TO GO!!! This my oldest nephew, the first is always so special!
Hmm… the nephews didn’t exactly follow the rules of the game… this is my youngest nephew!
Of course we are all familiar with the part of the game where we try and shove the number 10 up your nose! This is my middle nephew who also thought it would be a good idea to stroke my cactus plant later on in the evening! I don’t think he’ll be doing that again.
I’m pretty sure he was admiring Auntie Kimmy’s pretty design… right?
Finally we get a game going!
This is special technique… the one handed carrying baby throw! #nailedit
Nephew #1 had a different technique in mind… this pose though…
This was his face when said technique worked… he got the number 12!
The first time we played at a family gathering everyone was hooked all night. It was last year on vacation in California and we played for hours even after the sun went down! Here is my instagram from that night…
Family gatherings in our family usually include friends who have become family. Sometimes it’s important to be the just six of us immediate family members. Mostly it’s our big crew. I love the time we spend together even though it’s not as often as we would like. Even if all we do is sit around to eat and play games it matters to me. It feels like home wherever we are together.
My mom was in full GJ mode (the nephews call her “GJ” for Grandma Jacquie) and lovin it!
Nephew #3 is so cute!
I know…. this face… this shirt!! YOUNG AND FREE!!! I’m dyin…
Well, that ends our post on DIY Molkky Set post. To be honest, it’s not really the Molkky set that made my night. Games have a funny way of bringing people together. I was so grateful to have these people in my home together. Some of them have been with me since birth. I hope you and your family can have a wonderful cook out or family night and enjoy this game and each other as much as we did.
