As Maria von Trapp says “these are a few of my favorite things”. Today marks our first segment of 47 Grove’s Favorite Places! We absolutely LOVE New England (as you can tell) and love where we grew up on the north shore of Massachusetts. Today our area is covered in several feet of snow and more is to be expected this weekend. Sigh. We thought it would be a dream to post these #throwbackthursday photos (us… short sleeves… no snow… beach!) and at the same time share with you a place that has become very special to us. Rockport, Massachusetts!
If you haven’t visited our home area before – we encourage you to go at the end of summer. That way you can catch all of the places that only open during warm weather months but maybe get lucky and sneak in some early Fall stuff too. The end of summer is usually so depressing for most people. However, on the north shore there’s much to do in Rockport still and we love celebrating the change of season soon coming! Get it all in before the snow returns! This past August we took a double date with our husbands and just enjoyed being together.
Even from my little instagram photo can’t you tell this town is just magical? Rockport is your picturesque New England harbor town – and WE LOVE IT! The Red lobstah house behind us is quite famous. There are so many landmarks here you can just feel the history. This town brings so much value to our area! Our favorite place to be in Rockport is of course Bearskin Neck… because that’s where all the shopping goes down! That’s also where we take off for the high seas in our kayaks (by “high seas” we mean a guided tour of the reef area only about 100 feet from shore… cuz… it’s scary out there!). Bearskin Neck is where our mother’s favorite restaurant is located – My Place By The Sea! It’s called a “neck” quite literarily because the piece of land is a little peninsula that sticks out into the ocean. This has created a fantastic street of shops (and rich people houses) and an absolutely dreamy view of the ocean (and rich people looking at it from their rich people homes).
When beauty, nature, and history all comes together – that’s the best of New England! Whenever we visit Rockport there’s one place my husband will not let us miss. In fact he mostly insists we visit this particular place first. Two words… PEANUT. BRITTLE. He has an addiction. And I love peanut butter cups so…
Then after our sweets, we have dinner. Ha! Actually, we usually just grab something light at Bearskin Beck Bistro… I myself have a strange love for grilled cheese. So, I cheat on my gluten free diet and everyone else gets delicious lobstah bisque. We eat outside while we watch the guy across the street make pottery in front of his shop. Magic! If it’s my mom’s birthday we’ll eat at My Place by the Sea… literarily delicious food brought to your ocean side table! Save up though for that one, there’s a reason we only go once a year! Okay, now we are ready for shopping. There a ton of little shops that get their stuff from all around the world. If you know anything about me and Kendra you know we LOVE buying from Guatemala and really anywhere else in the world! We are a bit of world travelers and have found clothes and jewelry are just generally more gorgeous elsewhere.
Next we head over to Helmut’s Strudel because by this time the sun is setting and we need some warm beverages… and we’re german so… yeah Helmut’s Strudel it is! Cappuccino, german chocolate cake, pastries, hot cocoa! Yum and yummier!
Finally we’ve almost made it down to the end of Bearskin Neck and it’s time to enjoy God’s greatest creation – the ocean! We must have inherited our love for the ocean from our mother. We feel incredible blessed to have grown up 15 minutes or less from the sea. We spent every summer (and really all year round) making trips to the ocean. Our favorite beaches are Wingaersheak Beach (Gloucester), Singing Beach (Gloucester), Nahant Beach (Nahant), and going to the waterfront at Salem Willows and visiting the Friendship (Salem, MA). We’ll have to do another post on WHY we love each of those beaches. For now, let’s enjoy these throwback pics and remembering summer DOES exist…
Rockport’s homes are almost all historic and provide the best walking tour! If you’re like me then you appreciate checking out little homes on the water with their porches and flower boxes! So here’s a little more eye candy for you…
Well, we could go on forever about this town. But I leave you with this… Rockport is actually where the film The Proposal was filmed!!! That’s right!!! Gorgeous, right? We’re famous. Not just Rockport but they filmed all over our favorite New England towns. Massachusetts rocks!! #hometownpride
Now you’ll have to visit for yourself! Have you ever been? What’s your favorite part? Or favorite New England town?
